Local Breweries and Distilleries to Cool Off After a Summer Hike

There's no arguing that Canmore has several incredible hiking trails—or that hiking is one of the best things to do on a bluebird summer day. Whether you're leisurely exploring Policeman's Creek Boardwalk or Grassi Lakes or tackling the iconic Ha Ling Peak, there's just nothing quite like the sense of accomplishment that comes with finishing a hike. And what better way to revel in that feeling than by literally toasting it with a cold, refreshing beer or cocktail?

Luckily, Canmore has several fantastic breweries and distilleries. Even better, a few of them are within easy walking distance of Grande Rockies Resort. Whether you're visiting our Rocky Mountain town strictly to hike (we don't blame you!), here for work, on a romantic holiday, or spending time together as a family, here, you can have your cake (beer!) and 'eat' (drink!) it, too. Cheers!

Canmore Brewing Company

Canmore Brewing Company has some of the best views in town without hiking. That's why, on any given day, regardless of weather or season, you'll find lots of locals and visitors alike socializing over the award-winning beers. Although the brewery doesn't have a full kitchen, it does offer delicious, fresh, soft pretzels (the perfect accompaniment to beer!) and pub pies. Alternatively, you can order a local pizza—we highly recommend both Rocket Pie and Red Rock Pizza. Inside, games, including air hockey and darts, keep you entertained, and during the summer in Canmore, you won't find a better seat than on the dog-friendly patio. Check out the brewery's events page, as well, as there's almost always something fun going on, whether it's the monthly game night, a themed movie night, community fundraisers, a new limited-release beer launch, or live music.

For those especially curious minds, Canmore Brewing also offers popular brewery tours on Saturdays. You'll get a behind-the-scenes look at how their craft beers and sodas are made, plus get to sample a few of them. Insider tip: if you can't make a brewery tour or the time slots are sold out during your visit, request a table up top overlooking the brewery. You can see a lot of the action from up there, too!

The Grizzly Paw

We're not at all overstating it when we say The Grizzly Paw has something for everyone. From multiple locations open year-round to pub-style favourites and an outdoor summer beer garden complete with BBQ food truck and lawn games, The Grizzly Paw is one of the best Canmore activities all around. Stop into the original pub downtown to enjoy a pub menu and full bar, plus a heated patio. The newest concept, the family-friendly TANK310, offers a clever "tank to table" experience with an exclusive tap list and jaw-dropping mountain views from the floor-to-ceiling glass windows and multiple levels.

The Grizzly Pub also offers brewery tours at TANK310, available afternoons Wednesday through Sunday. The 45-55 minute tours include tastings of four beers or sodas, plus a freshly-canned beverage to take home. These tours are extremely popular for what to do in Canmore, so we recommend booking your slot as early as possible.

Must try: Beavertail Raspberry Ale

BLAKE Brewhouse & Distillery

Literally right across the street from the Grande Rockies Resort, BLAKE is a sleek microbrewery and distillery. Its huge garage doors give a nod to the space's former life as an auto shop—plus allow for incredible views regardless of where you sit. The fusion-style menu offers unexpectedly creative dishes like green curry prawns, pork belly burnt ends, and a weekly Wednesday curry bowl special. Sample one of eight rotating draft beers or house-made gin and vodka.

Time your hike to hit happy hour right after, from 2–5:00 pm Monday through Friday, when BLAKE offers 25% off all appetizers, dumplings, house craft beers, ready-to-drink, and signature cocktails. Plus, there are several themed weeknights, such as Taco Tuesdays and Mixology Mondays, when all signature cocktails are just $12. There's even a kids' menu, making this one of the best places to enjoy in Canmore as a family.

Also, don't miss trying the Canmore Cool ice cream, made in-house and with both dairy- and plant-based flavours. If 'Mud Dive' is available when you go, trust us, it's borderline transformative—rich chocolate ice cream with dark chocolate ganache, white chocolate, and flaky sea salt folded in.

But the most remarkable thing about BLAKE? The brewery offers completely custom-brewed beers! With advance notice, BLAKE's in-house brewer is more than happy to work with people to create a one-of-a-kind beer, whether it's for a special occasion, a corporate catering event, or just something different you'd like to enjoy at home.

Must try: Tailgater Pilsner and Secret Stache, made with pepper gin, pistachio liqueur, oat milk, rose syrup, and aquafaba

Wild Life Distillery

Its near-perfect reviews are a testament to just how high-quality Wild Life Distillery's craft spirits really are. WLD makes small-batch whisky, gin, and vodka, as well as several ready-to-drink canned cocktails, all from local Alberta grain. Pop into the tasting room for a drink or two, or book a distillery tour on Fridays or Saturdays. Tours include multiple tastings, one full-sized canned cocktail, a souvenir glass, and a nice discount on additional purchases. Note the distillery tours take place at another location in Canmore; they are NOT in the same building as the tasting room. Don't miss WLD Hour, when cocktails are $8 and canned cocktails are $5, every weekday from 6:00–8:00 pm. While the menu changes seasonally, the Community Cocktail is always a go-to. $5 from each drink sold goes back to a Canmore community organization, which also rotates.

Check the distillery's website and socials for special events while you're in town (or even if you're a local looking for some new Canmore activities!). They frequently host live music, open mic nights, and cocktail classes.
